sund

Definition

A strait or narrow stretch of water. Øresund is the strait between Zealand and Sweden, and Kronborg Castle at Helsingør overlooks the strait. A sund is also a busy passage for ferries and ships, so currents and wind can be strong. As a place-name ending, -sund tells you the name refers to a strait or sound.
