S
sø
Definition
A lake, written sø. Denmark's largest lake, Arresø, covers 39.6 km² according to Statistics Denmark, and the lake district around Silkeborg is among the best known for walking and canoeing. Because the country is low, lakes are often shallow and sheltered, with reedbeds and birdlife. On maps a blue area labelled sø is usually calm water, but swimming and boating rules differ from lake to lake. See also: å, mose, and the guide The Regions of Denmark: A Map-First Overview.
