S

strand

Definition

Beach. The word appears on road signs pointing toward the shore and inside many coastal place names. Denmark's coastline is more than 7,300 km long according to Statistics Denmark (7,314 km in its 2012 yearbook), so beaches range from windswept North Sea dunes to sheltered bays on the Kattegat and Baltic. A strand is not automatically safe for swimming or driving, so read local signs about currents, vehicles and protected dunes.
