S
skov
Definition
A forest or wood. Beech woods are a characteristic part of the Danish landscape and often run close to the water on the Kattegat coast. Statistics Denmark's 2012 yearbook put forests and moorland together at about 16 per cent of land use, against 66 per cent farming, so a skov is a visible island of woodland in an open landscape. Many are public and good for walking and cycling, but check signs for private or protected areas. See also: hede, høj, and the guide How to Read a Map of Denmark.
