F

fjord

Definition

A shallow, winding inlet of the sea with low banks, not the steep glacial valley the word suggests in Norway. Roskilde Fjord on Zealand and the Limfjord in North Jutland are well-known examples. Fjords shelter small harbour towns, birdlife and calm sailing water. The Limfjord cuts right across the north of Jutland, which is why Statistics Denmark ranks Vendsyssel-Thy among the largest islands.
