Region

North Jutland and Skagen

North Jutland is shaped by the Limfjord, a long inlet that cuts across the peninsula, and by the dunes and light of the northern coast. Aalborg is its main city. At the very tip lies Skagen, known for its light and artists' history, and the sandy spit of Grenen where two seas meet. The area is flat and open, and the weather is part of its character. It suits those who enjoy big skies, dunes and quiet fishing communities. Northern Jutland is a landscape of sandy ground, shifting dunes, thin forest and open fjord water. The Limfjord cuts across the peninsula and gives the region sheltered shores on one side and a harsher North Sea coast on the other. Towards the tip, the land narrows into a long sand spit at Grenen, where the Kattegat and Skagerrak meet in visible lines of surf, and Skagen's yellow-painted houses stand in a landscape famous with painters for its light. Late spring to early autumn gives the best chance of clear light and manageable wind, with the long summer evenings especially atmospheric. Practical tip: wind is a constant, so bring a windproof layer even in July, and book accommodation early for high summer, since the choice of places is limited and the northern tip is a popular destination.
