gade

Definition

Street. It is the usual ending of street names in towns and cities, for example Vestergade, Østergade and Nørregade, which mean west, east and north street. The compass prefix often tells you where the street ran in relation to the old town centre. On a town map a -gade ending helps you spot streets quickly among squares, harbours and parks.
